I’m not going to sugar coat it or make this into some long post about how I’ve figured out the perfect way to homeschool young kids. I am totally figuring this out as we go along. We knew early on in the Spring that we would be homeschooling our son for Pre-k this year. Between Covid-19 and a terrible experience at a school that turned out to be more like a baby fight club, we knew this was the right decision for us.
I know a lot of people out there didn’t get to make a decision or had to decide last minute. So, I just wanted to share some free resources and ideas that might help. At the bottom of the page there is a theme calendar, a weekly planning sheet, and a couple worksheets I made that my 4 year old really likes.
We are just a couple weeks in at this point, but I feel like we have definitely found our rhythm. Here is the routine that has been working for us;
- 8:30-9:15: Busy Binders
- 9:15-10: Circle Time
- Pledge of Allegiance
- Calendar and Weather
- Movement
- Review letter and number of the day
- Review shape and color of the week
- Read books
- Craft or project on weekly theme
- 10:00-10:45: Worksheets, Activities, Puzzles.
- 10:45-11:00: Snack Time
- 11:00-12:00 Free Play
I had planned on my two year old joining in on our routine, but she currently has no interest (except for snack and play time) so I’m not pushing it. Everyday, after the Pledge of Allegiance where she waves the American flag and screams YEEHAW! ( I had no idea how patriotic she is), she puts on her Minnie Mouse heels and dips out to play doctor with her babies. (I mean she IS pretending to be a doctor so I feel like that is a good sign, right?)
I hope you find these tools and activities helpful. I will be posting new activities every week so be sure to check back!
