Homeschool Week 29: Community Helpers

This week was all about community helpers. We learned about police officers, firefighters, farmers and everyone in between. The kids had a lot of fun with this theme. We spent so much time this week playing and pretending to be different kinds of helpers.

I got the hats from Party City. The kids loved them and they were super inexpensive!

I found great resources on Teacher Pay Teacher for this week. (I’ll link them below.) We had coloring sheets, matching games, and the cutest little flip book that we didn’t do. My son freaked out at the suggestion that we use a photo of his face to put on the different kinds of helpers and stated “I already told you I don’t want to pick a job!” I don’t know why this kid always thinks I am trying to force him to get a job at five years old.

Back in December he thought I was trying to ship him up to the North Pole for a work / study program when I suggested a activity where you fill out a “Elf Application”. I am also pretty sure that his plan is to live with me forever. (Not going to lie, that’s ok with me.)

There were so many great choices for books this week too! We loved the Cloverleaf books, and of course we love anything Daniel Tiger.

By far, my son’s favorite activity was playing mail carrier. Now, to be totally honest I had wanted this to be a little more involved than just stickers and envelopes. But, I ran out of time and this was way easier than trying to make individual mailboxes out of cardboard. And he loved it anyway!

All you need is some envelopes, stickers, and post-it’s. First, I wrote some numbers on the envelopes. Then, I had my son put the corresponding amount of stickers on each envelope. Once he was finished I stuck post-it’s with each number around the play room and had him deliver his mail to each spot.

We had so much fun with this! And it was a great way to work on number recognition and matching! We even did a timed one to see how fast he could deliver his mail!

All in all it was a great week! Follow me on Instagram to see more of how we homeschool!

And make sure to check back next week because we are moving onto the farm!

Have a great week!
